Haveli of Sultan-Ul-Qaum Jassa Singh Ahluwalia in Kapurthala

The images depict the ruins of the Haveli of Jassa Singh Ahluwalia, an architectural masterpiece likely constructed and renovated in the latter half of the 18th century. Referred to as the Jallow Khanna Complex, it also includes the Nihal Palace. Notably, similar to other royal architectures repurposed in colonial and post-colonial Punjab, sections of the Haveli would also be serviced as a girls’ school up until the 1960’s.

As I delve deeper into my studies on Punjab’s architecture, a stark reality emerges: the widespread neglect of historical architecture. This neglect threatens the preservation of Punjabi architectural heritage, vividly illustrated by the plight of the Haveli. Urbanisation, inadequate maintenance, and limited restoration funding contribute to the decay and the eventual demolition of these historic structures, therefore erasing their cultural significance and historical value. Without careful conservation, especially at the current direction it is heading, we will lose these precious links to our history and identity and therefore have nothing to show for in the future.
