First Five star rank officer in air force

I was talking to a friend who is a pilot since last 10 years. According to him, he is yet to master one Aircraft. Now imagine flying 60. Including fighting 2 wars. Indian Air Force today is arguably is one of the most potent air warrior outfits in the world. And one of its formidable servants, Marshal of the Air Force, Arjan Singh left us today.

He was the only Officer to attain the highest rank of Marshal of the Air Force which is equivalent to Field Marshal in the Army. The image of the 96 year veteran paying his last respects to the late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, leaving his wheelchair and saluting the former President on his demise in 2015 is a testament to his grit. Modernization of Airforce was one of his dreams and according to Former Raksha Mantri Manohar Parikkar, he was always in touch with latest tech and kept inquiring about the developments in IAF.

At a young age of 44, he was tasked with leading the Indian Air Force as the Chief of Air Staff in 1964. Pakistan launched its Operation Grand Slam during 1965 war. When summoned for help by the then Defence Minister, with characteristic nonchalence he replied, “in one hour”. And true to his word within an hour IAF was wreaking havoc on PAF.

He served as Chief till 1969 and retired in 1970. He was awarded the Padma Vibhushan for his immense contribution in the 1965 war. The Indian Government conferred the rank of Marshal of the Air Force in 2002. May he continue guiding us from the heavens.
